THE PVL SLEEP TOOLKIT
Bedtime Calculator
Plan tonight around tomorrow.
Choose when you want to wake up, how much time you want for sleep, and an allowance for falling asleep. We’ll work backward to a simple bedtime plan.

THE METHOD, MADE CLEAR
How does the bedtime calculator work?
The calculator performs clock-time arithmetic using the values you enter. It first subtracts your chosen sleep duration from your wake-up time, then subtracts the time you allow for falling asleep. An optional wind-down window is placed before that bedtime.
Wind-down start = bedtime − chosen wind-down allowance
Example: a 7:00 AM wake-up minus 8 hours gives an 11:00 PM target time for sleep on the previous day. Allowing 15 minutes to fall asleep means getting into bed at 10:45 PM. A 30-minute wind-down allowance starts at 10:15 PM.
What your plan tells you
- The bedtime implied by your selected wake-up time and sleep target.
- The difference between time planned in bed and time intended for sleep.
- Whether an activity belongs on the previous day or the wake-up day.
What it cannot tell you
- Your personal sleep requirement or the exact time you will fall asleep.
- Your sleep stages, an ideal sleep-cycle boundary, or how rested you will feel.
- How much sleep you will actually get if your night is interrupted.
Bedtime calculator questions
What time should I go to bed if I wake up at 7 AM?
With an 8-hour sleep target and a 15-minute fall-asleep allowance, the calculated bedtime is 10:45 PM on the previous day. Those values are an example. Change the target and allowance above to calculate a different plan.
Is 8 hours the right sleep target for me?
This calculator cannot determine that. Eight hours is the starting example, and the target is adjustable. Your personal sleep needs and any persistent sleep difficulties should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional when needed.
Does this calculator use 90-minute sleep cycles?
No. The calculation uses your selected sleep duration and timing allowances. It does not estimate sleep stages or promise that you will wake at a particular point in a sleep cycle.
Why are bedtime and target time for sleep different?
Bedtime is when the plan says to get into bed. The target time for sleep is later by the number of minutes you allow for falling asleep. That allowance is your estimate and does not predict how quickly sleep will actually begin.
Can I use a morning or daytime wake-up time?
Yes. The arithmetic works with any valid clock time. “Previous day” and “Wake-up day” show how the plan crosses midnight. This is a schedule calculation and does not assess whether a daytime or shift-work sleep schedule suits you.
What about clock changes, travel, or waking during the night?
The tool works with clock times only. It does not apply a date, daylight-saving change, travel time-zone conversion, or an allowance for time awake overnight. Account for those separately when interpreting the plan.
